This classic trip begins in the ancient capital Cusco, visiting Inca sites, before trekking the 'Inca Trail' to Machu Picchu. The nearby Cordillera Vilcanota is Peru's second largest Andean range and the circuit of its highest mountain, Nevado Ausangate (6384m) completes a challenging visit to the Inca heart of Peru.
We fly into Cusco (3350m) with time to acclimatise walking to the nearby Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman and other sites. Leaving Cusco now we visit traditional markets and climb the great Inca terraces at Ollantaytambo in the 'Sacred Valley' on our way to the start of the Inca Trail.
In just four days we journey from cacti to cloud forest using a 'road' built 500 years ago until a final high pass reveals the mystery of Machu Picchu. Don't undestimate the 'Inca Trail' though. With its highest pass at 4198m, good acclimatisation and a gradual build-up is essential.
Our trek in the Cordillera Vilcanota encircles Ausangate, the third highest mountain in Peru. It is quite a hard high-altitude trek over 3 passes but with llamas and alpacas, turquoise lakes, glaciers and hot springs and encounters with traditional Indians, it is a rich and rewarding experience.
“Our trip was great from start to finish. We have been meaning to phone you and rave about the great time we had!”
