A vigorous circular trek to Chomolhari Base camp with a high pass crossing leading into the Yaksa Valley. There is time to visit the sights and absorb a little of the culture and traditions of this secretive Himalayan kingdom.
After a warm up in Bhutan’s capital city of Thimpu, and an acclimatisation walk to Takstang clifftop monastery, we set off on trek. Emerging out of the forest, we reach a summer settlement of yak herdsmen and the gateway to Chomolhari, 7314m, second highest peak in Bhutan. At our highest pass, Bhonte La (4890m) we are rewarded with stunning views of Jichu Drake and the skyline of the Bhutan Himalayas perched along the Tibetan border. The Yaksa Valley and another two high passes complete the trek and a steep descent rejoins our outward route at Shana. A classic Bhutan experience!
